Strong to Severe Thunderstorms Possible Today and Tonight

Strong to Severe Thunderstorms Possible Today and Tonight

As a strong cold front pushes east today, strong or even severe storms may develop out ahead of it.  Our window of oppurtunity will be anywhere from 4pm on into tonight.  Some storms will be capable of producing strong gusty winds up to 60 or 70mph, large hail, frequent cloud-to-ground lightning, and heavy rainfall.  Our tornado threat with storms late today and tonight is very low at this time.  Much of our severe weather potential seems to be focused in northwest parts of the state.

Skies will otherwise be mostly cloudy with highs in the upper 80s and low 90s today.  Tomorrow, we will be on the back side of this unusually strong cold front.  Afternoon highs should be closer to 80 degrees, but WAFF-48 Pinpoint Predictior has afternoon highs peaking in the low and mid 70s.  This of course is dependant on how much cloud cover vs. sunshine we have tomorrow afternoon.

Strong Storms in the Forecast for Another Day

Strong Storms in the Forecast for Another Day

A warm-moist air mass and an unstable atmosphere will combine with an upper-level disturbance on Monday to fire more showers and thunderstorms across the Valley.  Some storms may be strong to severe.  Strong gusty winds and large hail along with frequent cloud-to-ground lightning will make up much of the storm activity that does develop in our area.  These storms will be slow-moving and so we may see localized flooding in some areas too.

Throughout much of the day, skies will be partly sunny.  The warm and muggy weather will be with us all day as afternoon highs reach the upper 80s.

Rain Chances Increasing Soon

Rain Chances Increasing Soon

So what's been going on this weekend?  Why have we been so warm and dry.  Right now we have an upper-level ridge on top of the Southeast.  This ridge has kept the rain and storms north and west of here.  But this ridge is breaking down over the next couple of days and this will make us more vulnerable to possible showers or thunderstorms.

As the ridge begins weakening, we stand a better chance at a few afternoon isolated showers and storms by Monday.

By Tuesday, an upper-level trough may enhance a few widespread showers and storms in our area.  Still no severe weather is anticipated.

But with a flattening of the ridge or a few disturbances developing and rolling through our Valley, slight rain chances will stay around here through the end of the week.

Warmer and Muggy

Warmer and Muggy

As a stalled from begins moving north as a warm front, you'll begin to notice a couple different effects.  South winds at 5 to 10mph will increase warm things up as we head into Saturday.  Rain chances will remain to our north and west.

By Sunday the warm front north of here may settle southward into Southern Tennessee.  A few isolated showers or storms may begin to pop up in the afternoon, but those chances are 20% or less.  Temperatures will hit the mid 80s.

In-Between Systems

Looking like a great evening here in the Valley. Skies are going to be mainly clear tonight with rain moving to our east, out of the Tennessee Valley.  Temperatures tonight fall to around 50 degrees.

Sunshine and warm weather tomorrow as we head into the lower 80s, but another upper-level low is moving this direction.  And by Friday, a few more clouds and a slight chance of wet weather returns to the forecast.

Rain chances will be picking up over the weekend as the front moves through the Valley.
