The Alabama Department of Public Safety's Operation Safe Holidays traffic safety campaign was a success.

A 24-day initiative designed to reduce crashes, injuries and fatalities during the busy holiday travel period, Operation Safe Holidays ran from Dec. 10, 2010, through Jan. 2, 2011. "The campaign was a success, and 10 more people were able to spend the holidays with their loved ones," said Col. F.A. Bingham, acting director of Public Safety.

Ford is recalling nearly 15,000 trucks and crossovers because of problems with electrical systems that can short out and create a fire.

The recall includes some 2011 F-150's, F-250's, F-350's, F-450's, F-550's, Ford Edge and Lincoln MKS.

To save lives and promote safe driving this New Year's Eve, AAA-Alabama and wrecker services across the state will again offer Tow-for-Life. This public service program provides free towing services to keep impaired drivers off the road. This is the 24th year for the program, and the service is provided to AAA members and non-members alike. AAA does not condone drinking and driving and encourages all motorists to act responsibly to keep drunk drivers off the road throughout the holidays.

2 men killed in wreck

Lawrence County officials say two men died when their vehicle collided with trees off Lawrence County road 150.

29-year-old Joshua Sivley of the Hatton community, and 30-year-old Christopher Hanes, of the East Lawrence area, died at the scene Tuesday night.

Alabama Department of Homeland Security encourages Alabama citizens to travel safely and efficiently this time of year. With the hectic pace of holiday travel it is easy to forget simple tips that will make your airport and highway travel experience easier.

“Every year air travelers with wrapped gifts and homemade foods increase wait times at airport checkpoints,” said Alabama Homeland Security Director Art Faulkner. “This becomes frustrating for all travelers because it slows down the security process.”

A cold front moved through early this afternoon and behind it a strong North wind continues to bring in much drier and colder air for your Thursday.  After overnight lows in the upper 20s and highs in the upper 40s Thursday all eyes will be on the approaching storm system that will move across the Plains Friday and into the Southeast on Christmas Day.

Highway travel during the 2010 Christmas and New Year holiday weeks is expected to be heavy in Alabama as families head for holiday destinations. The Alabama Department of Transportation urges motorists to drive safely in their travels.

As an added precaution during the heavily travelled holiday, Transportation Director Joe McInnes announced today there would be no temporary lane closures on Alabama interstates after 12 noon, Thursday, December 23rd, through midnight, Sunday, December 26th. Additionally, the same observances will apply from Thursday, December 30th, through midnight Sunday, January 2, 2011.
