Leonid Meteor Shower This Weekend

By Jeff Castle

The annual Leonid Meteor Shower will be at it's peak this weekend and we should have good viewing weather for it.  A mainly clear and moonless sky should help out the view.  The Leonids are named as such due to the fact that the meteors seems to emanate from the constellation Leo.

The meteors are caused as the Earth passes through the debris cloud of the Comet Tempel-Tuttle.  The best viewing will be after midnight up until the pre-dawn hours.  It's not expected to be a spectacular show this year, but 10-20 meteors are possible per hour.  Some of the meteors could be bright and leave long trails as they streak across the night sky.

With temperatures dropping into the 30s again tonight, make sure you have on enough layers for your late night star gazing!
