Cancer is one of the leading causes of death in the United States.

Residents in Lawrence County gathered Saturday to call for a cure.

Nearly 200 people participated in the "1st Annual Della Taylor Cancer Survivors Walk For Life" in north Courtland.

The walk began at R.A. Hubbard High School's parking lot. Several cancer patients and survivors were on hand and say they were very moved.

"For me it was a first time experience getting diagnosed and the shock of it," Della Taylor, breast cancer survivor.

"It's really touching to see as many people in this community and surrounding communities come out and support," Laverne Smith, breast cancer survivor.

All donations received will go toward helping cancer patients in the area.

Blake sent The Associated Press an email that includes photos of a state flag flying at a base in Afghanistan.

Blake asked the governor's office for a state flag during the summer, but his request was refused because of the cost.
