Come celebrate Gen. Joe Wheeler's birthday | Arts & Culture
All are invited to celebrate General Joe Wheeler’s birthday at his home on September 7.
The Alabama Historical Commission is honoring Wheeler’s birthday at Pond Spring, the general’s home. Visitors will be able to sample cake from a family recipe said to be the general’s favorite.
This annual celebration will begin at 10 a.m. with a welcoming ceremony. Boy Scouts will present the flags at this event. The public can explore the ground from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and eat cake while it lasts. Drinks will be donated by the Pepsi Bottling Co.
Re-enactors will fire a working Civil War cannon and folk artists will demonstrate their skills. The Olde Towne Brass Band will be playing on the front porch of the house from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. The LifeSouth Community Blood Center’s Bloodmobile will also be holding a blood drive on the premises.
Attendance and refreshments are free. Guided tours of the house will cost some money and run every hour from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
