WEATHER BLOG: Warm and muggy with thunderstorms...

Southerly winds have returned to the Tennessee Valley and temperatures will remain above normal during the afternoon and overnight hours through Thursday.  The south wind will continue to bring in low level moisture so showers and thunderstorms will be possible over the next couple of days due to upper level disturbances and daytime heating.

Highs will be in the upper 70s and lower 80s Tuesday and Wednesday with scattered showers and thunderstorms developing.   Some of the thunderstorms could become strong with locally heavy rain and gusty winds.  Overnight lows will be in the middle 60s.

WEATHER BLOG: A great start to the work week

A rain cooled boundary moved in early this afternoon from a cluster of showers and thunderstorms that formed along the Gulf Coast late Saturday night and early Sunday morning.  This area of rain is finally tracking east of the Tennessee Valley.

Lawrence Co. students participate in Ag Day

Ag Day is a cooperative effort, helping the Alabama Chicken and Egg Festival.

LAWRENCE COUNTY, AL (WAFF)- On Friday, the farm came to students in Moulton.

Agricultural Initiative Career Day or Ag Day was held at the county fairgrounds and at Lawrence County High next door.

Farmers weren't the only ones teaching the kids. They even had bankers talking about how to get farm loans.

The school district began an advanced agriculture curriculum after being accepted in the state's innovative school system program three years ago.

"It imbeds agriculture into our academics and our instruction. It makes learning more relevant, hopefully more rigorous for our students," said Lawrence County Superintendent Heath Grimes.

Ag Day is a cooperative effort, helping the Alabama Chicken and Egg Festival, which started Friday night, and runs through the weekend at the Lawrence County fairgrounds.

Alabama adopts Common Core testing for students

State Superintendent of Education Tommy Bice said the program will help keep Alabama students on a competitive educational level with kids across the country.

LAWRENCE COUNTY, AL (WAFF)- Alabama is the first state to adopt a standardized testing system for the Common Core standards, a controversial national school program. An effort to repeal Common Core was killed in a state senate committee last month, but opponents aren't giving up.

State Superintendent of Education Tommy Bice said the program will help keep Alabama students on a competitive educational level with kids across the country.

The State Board of Education passed the ACT Aspire standardized test as a way to measure the progress of students in grades three through eight. The first administering of the test will be in August.

Bice talked about the program after speaking with Lawrence County High School students Friday.

The Common Core standards are education benchmarks set for schools across the nation. Forty-five states and the District of Columbia have adopted it.
