Car seat safety parents' first concern while traveling

Car seat safety should be one of the first things parents get checked.

HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF)- Now is the time many of us grab the kids and our stuff and travel.  Whether it's for a week or the day, car seat safety should be one of the first things parents get checked.

Little Kelsey is only 8 months old, but he is the center of his parent's world. His dad, Pranteek Patnaik, is in the medical field and knows how important safety is for traveling with children.

That's why he came to Huntsville Hospital to allow the pros to install Kelsey's car seat.

"I think, as a parent, safety, obviously, we always hear the term "precious cargo" and safety with that, and your little one brings it to a whole new level when you're a parent," said Patnaik.

The technician will go over some specific points with dad, give him a quick safety lesson, and make sure the seat is installed correctly.

WEATHER BLOG: Finally warming up

WEATHER BLOG: Finally warming up

By Jeff Castle

It hasn't felt at all like May in the last few days and it's in fact been a record setting stretch of cool weather.  Some of you may have even had to turn the heat back on for a little bit (I toughed it out, even though it got as cool as 63 in the house!).

Man arrested in connection with fatal shooting

At least one person died in a shooting in Trinity.

TRINITY, AL (WAFF)- One person was shot and killed in Lawrence County Sunday night.

The coroner confirmed Daniel Peoples died at 599 County Road 345 in Trinity.

Authorities arrested 39-year-old Brandon Lorne Barnes and charged him with manslaughter.

The Lawrence County Sheriff's Department said they received a phone call about the shooting around 9:30 p.m.

When deputies arrived, they found a man dead.

The sheriff said Peoples and his common law wife and her son had gone to Barnes' home to visit. He said alcohol was consumed, and Peoples and Barnes exchanged words about inappropriate comments made about Barnes' wife, and an argument ensued.

Authorities said that argument led to the shooting death of Peoples.

Barnes was still at the scene when deputies arrived, and he was taken into custody without incident.

Barnes was questioned, charged, and remains in the Lawrence County Jail on a $10,000 bond.

A WAFF 48 Wedding: Engagement Photos and more planning!

A WAFF 48 Wedding: Engagement Photos and more planning!

It may be Kentucky Derby weekend, but we’re also coming down the stretch to our big day! We’ve had a lot of things in the works and just finished taking our engagement pictures.

Sarah and I were a little afraid at how they’d turn out because we both joke that we’re not very photogenic, but we couldn’t be more pleased at the results. Butler Studio out of the Shoals is doing the photography for our wedding and also agreed to do our engagement photo session. They helped us narrow down a location, gave us tips and recommendations on what to wear (you’d be surprised at what colors don’t photograph well), and made what could’ve been a very stressful time – extremely fun and enjoyable! They were also very flexible when we realized that we wouldn’t be able to take our pictures in downtown Florence because of the massive crowds due to First Fridays.
