Blood donations needed due to winter weather

Blood donations needed due to winter weather

The recent winter weather has impacted blood collections in our area. The freezing rain, sleet and snow resulted in more than 470 units of blood that could not be collected due to blood donation center closures, cancelled blood drives and the inability of donors to attend blood drives.

Donors are encouraged to donate as soon as possible after conditions have improved enough to allow for safe travel. There is a special need for type O and type B blood donors.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Schools, government offices and businesses remain closed for the second day in much of the northern half of Alabama as the state continues to recover from what was a near record snowfall in some areas.

Gov. Bob Riley ordered state offices north of Clanton to remain closed for the second straight day Tuesday.

In the Huntsville area, where 8.9 inches of snow was reported late Sunday and early Monday, the sprawling Redstone Arsenal Army base remained closed to all but essential personnel.

Many businesses, offices and schools remained closed in the Birmingham area.

Winter weather driving tips

Winter weather driving tips

With predictions of winter weather for all of northern Alabama on Sunday, drivers might find navigating area roadways a little bit more challenging.

The Allstate Insurance Company is offering drivers the following safety tips for driving in extreme winter weather conditions:

1.      Reduce your speed

Snow and ice greatly increase the stopping distance for all vehicles. Even four-wheel drive vehicles need to adjust to hazardous road conditions. Not knowing when you are about to encounter black ice, the best driving advice to those that must be on the road is, slow down.

2.      Maintain your car and check that the:

q       Tires don’t show excessive signs of wear

q       Battery is fully charged

q       Wipers are working and windshield fluid is full

q       Cooling system is in good working condition
